Neerja was a flight attendant who was murdered while saving passengers from terrorists on board hijacked Pan Am Flight 73. She could have escaped the flight but decided not to and was killed while shielding three children from bullets. A square called Neerja Bhanot Chowk in Mumbai, Maharashtra has also been named after her. To honour her bravery, the Indian Postal Service released a stamp commemorating her.

"Neerja Bhanot is the youngest Indian to be awarded the Ashok Chakra, India's highest honour for courage in peace time."said Dr Murthy.
